George Ella Lyon and Richard Taylor are two of Kentucky's most beloved writers/poets who will be together at the historic Southgate Street School in Newport to read and discuss their work. Richard Taylor was the Kentucky Poet Laureate in 1999 and George Ella Lyon in 2015.
Taylor is professor of English and Kenan Visiting Writer at Transylvania University and has written over a dozen books, including "Sue Mundy, Girty, and Earth Bones" and, most recently, "Elkhorn: The Evolution of a Kentucky Landscape." He lives in Frankfort, near the Elkhorn Creek.
Lyon is the award-winning author of more than forty books, including Golden Kite Award-winner "Borrowed Children," Appalachian Writers Association Book of the Year "Catalpa," Aesop Prize-winner “Which Side Are You On? The Story of a Song." Her poem “Where I’m From” is featured in the PBS series "The United States of Poetry" and has become a model for teachers around the world. She lives in Lexington.

About the Kentucky Poet Laureate
The Kentucky Poet Laureate, a position established by the Kentucky General Assembly in 1991, is appointed by the Governor for a two-year term (based on nominations collected by the Kentucky Arts Council) and is expected to travel the state promoting the literary arts at meetings, seminars and conferences.
