      President's
                    Letter

There has never been a more challenging time for journalists. Everyone is expected to do more during the work day. Print, on line, broadcast and social media -- more platforms requiring content. At the same time, getting access to public information at times can be tougher than ever.

That's where the Society of Professional Journalists Greater Cincinnati Pro Chapter can help. We're on top of trends and issues of importance to journalists. Our programs are designed to help keep everyone at the top of their game. That takes constant communication with SPJ members and recruitment of new members to help fulfill our mission.

To do that, the chapter is launching a quarterly newsletter so you can stay current on meetings, programs and interesting news about Cincinnati journalism. We hope you like it.  We hope you'll contribute thoughts, ideas, articles and feedback about the effort.

SPJ Region 4-5 Conference 2016 in Cincinnati a great success
By Kaye Spector, Cleveland and Ginny McCabe, Cincinnati

Each year, SPJ's Region 4 holds a regional conference for journalists, so they can sharpen their skills, learn about the latest technologies, and talk about some of the top trends in the industry.

This year, SPJ Region 4 (Ohio, Michigan, Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia) and Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky) partnered to host a joint regional conference in Cincinnati on April 1-2 at the Kingsgate Marriott.

The SPJ Region 4-5 Conference was packed with educational sessions, panel discussions, a time for networking, and a silent auction. A few of the highlights included a keynote address by Stephen George, executive editor of Louisville Public Media, and a SuperSession on the debate over body-cam and dash-cam videos.

Overall, the event featured 14 panels, 48 speakers, 27 sponsors and more than 200 registrants, including 4 national SPJ presidents. Special thanks to everyone who was a part of this stellar event - from the planning committee and sponsors to the speakers, special guests and attendees.

The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.

To ensure that the concept of self-government outlined by the U.S. Constitution remains a reality into future centuries, the American people must be well informed in order to make decisions regarding their lives, and their local and national communities.

It is the role of journalists to provide this information in an accurate, comprehensive, timely and understandable manner.
