Local honors at SPJ Ohio's Best Journalism awards

The 2016 Ohio SPJ Awards/Ohio’s Best Journalism luncheon was held in Columbus, Ohio at The Boat House Restaurant on Sat., Aug. 27. Close to 100 of Ohio’s top journalists were in attendance.

A total of 652 entries were submitted in the 2016 contest. The awards celebration recognized the top work for the 2015 calendar year. Work was honored in a number of different categories, including Large Circulation Print, (more than 75,000 circulation) Small Circulation Print, (less than 75,000 circulation) Digital Media, Radio, Television, College, Freelance Print, Freelance Digital and Trade Publications. (The Digital and Freelance categories were new this year.)

Reflecting on the region’s finest, a total of 312 winners were chosen across all divisions and categories. The contest entries were judged by members of the Long Island Press Club.

The state’s top winners included The Columbus Dispatch with 30 awards; The Cincinnati Enquirer with 24 awards; The Chronicle-Telegraph with 14 awards; and The Akron Beacon Journal with 13 awards. Top broadcast winners included WKSU Radio with 10 awards; WVXU 91.7 Radio with 15 awards and WBNS-TV with nine awards.

Annually, the contest is hosted by the state’s three Society of Professional Journalists chapters – Cincinnati, Central Ohio and Cleveland. Each year, the awards banquet site rotates between the three cities. In 2015, Cincinnati hosted an awards luncheon on BB Riverboats. Columbus held this year’s event at The Boat House at Confluence Park in downtown Columbus. Cleveland it set to host the festivities in 2017.
