2019 EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM CONTEST
WINNERS AND FINALISTS

The Greater Cincinnati Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is pleased to announce the winners and finalists in the 2018 Excellence In Journalism Contest.

We thank the members of the Arkansas SPJ Pro Chapter for their work in judging the entries.

ALL MEDIA

GERALD WHITE MEMORIAL AWARD
WINNER: “How Honda Failed Kyle Plush”
     ENTRANT:  Alexander Coolidge
MEDIA OUTLET:  The Cincinnati Enquirer – cincinnati.com
JUDGE’S COMMENT:  “After an accident claimed a local boy’s life, the Enquirer decided to dig a little deeper.  In doing so, they not only uncovered a fatal flaw in design of the boy’s vehicle, but also the manufacturer and regulatory agencies’ failure to recall the vehicle, despite receiving safety complaints prior to the boy’s death.  By looking past the surface of the story the Enquirer exposed those lapses, leading to agency reforms and improved public safety. Fine work!

CAMILLA WARRICK AWARD

WINNER:  “The Sex Talk:  The Conversation That Is Not Happening About Campus Sexual Assault”
ENTRANTS:  Kate Murphy and Meg Vogel
MEDIA OUTLET:  The Cincinnati Enquirer – cincinnati.com
JUDGE’S COMMENT:  This well-constructed multimedia project navigates every possible avenue to examine sexual assault on college campuses.  Each participant is relatable and offers a unique, personal viewpoint that draws the audience into the conversation.  Their myriad perspectives underscore the complex nature of campus sexual assault, while the emotion displayed in each interview keeps the audience engaged.  Breaking down the conversation into bite-sized topics was a smart decision.  In addition, the webpages are easy to navigate and the production quality is top-notch. While it may feel more comfortable to develop superficial solutions to a problem that has long lingered in the shadows of public consciousness, shedding light on the situation arms communities and institutions with the knowledge and perspective they need to develop long-term solutions and enact true justice.  Therefore, this project is wholly deserving of the Camilla Warrick Award.

FIRST AMENDMENT AWARD
WINNER:  “The Enquirer Staff:  FOI Filings”
ENTRANTS:  Cincinnati Enquirer Staff – John Greiner & Darren Ford
MEDIA OUTLET:  The Cincinnati Enquirer – cincinnati.com
JUDGE’S COMMENT:  Wow!  A newspaper that still fights doggedly against the forces that seek to let government officials operate in the dark.  Every journalist in Ohio owes deep gratitude to the Enquirer and its lawyers at Graydon Head for the willingness to demand that coroners, judges, police, city council members and economic development officials comply with public access laws.  Shining a light, indeed.”

JUDGE’S COMMENT:  “Good beat reporting might often go unlooked, especially if it is of smaller communities or events considered by many to be mundane news. That local news, however, is very important to the people who live in that community.  Patricia Scheyer with The River City News has done an excellent job of covering the small city of Taylor Mill.  Without her coverage, many of the things she unearthed might never have reached the light of day.  While local newspapers are struggling financially, her reporting shows why local news is still very important.  Well done.”
