Cincinnati SPJ Chapter Receives National Honors

The Society of Professional Journalists annually honors select professional chapters for their commitment to SPJ’s mission and the journalism profession. In addition, SPJ distinguishes seven of its professional chapters with this year’s Circle of Excellence Awards, a collection of awards that recognize outstanding work in First Amendment/Freedom of Information, professional development, diversity and student relations (formerly campus relations).

The Large Chapter of the Year award is open to chapters with 75 or more members, while the Small Chapter of the Year award is open to chapters with fewer than 75 members.

Large Chapter of the Year

This year, SPJ Florida was selected as the Large Chapter of the Year. It had an excellent year and was worth recognizing.

Small Chapter of the Year

This year’s winner of Small Chapter of the Year is the Cincinnati Pro Chapter, which also had an excellent year worth recognizing.

Chapters with 75 or more members are eligible for Large Circle of Excellence Awards. Small Circle of Excellence Awards are for chapters with fewer than 75 members.

Recap: The Ohio SPJ Awards

Ohio’s Best Journalism 2021 was celebrated at an October luncheon event on BB Riverboats in Cincinnati. Visit the Ohio’s Best Journalism awards website at www.ohiospjawards.org to view videos of some of our first-place winners, celebration photos, the celebration booklet, and to view the judges’ comments for many of the first-place winners.

We’re also excited to feature a photo submitted by Rebecca Benson, The Blade, Best Photographer in Ohio, Best of Show First, Large Print, on our home page.

The Cincinnati SPJ Chapter served as the host of this year’s awards celebration – and thank you to the following winners who shared their stories in videos:

Your participation advances our profession, and supports scholarship programs administered by the Central Ohio, Cincinnati and Cleveland Professional Chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, as well as programming for journalists throughout our state.

SPJ History: Unique Chapter Finds at SPJ's HQ

Recently, the Cincy SPJ Chapter came across some unique treasures while participating in a little spring cleaning at SPJ's headquarters. Discoveries related to the "Queen City SPJ," as it was then known, include interesting finds like audio tapes, chapter reports and even "Protect free speech for my sake" onesies. Stay tuned as we begin cataloging these one-of-a-kind items in our personal archive - we'll share some updates and images with you in the coming months!

We are pleased to announce that we have established the Emil Dansker Scholarship Fund.

Cincinnati SPJ in partnership with Emil Dansker’s family has set up the "Emil Dansker Scholarship Fund," which will be administered through the SPJ Foundation.
