Position Description
 
Cincinnati Public Radio is seeking its inaugural Adam R. Scripps fellow — a unique position designed to give an early career journalist the skills they need to succeed in the field. The successful candidate for this three-year, grant-funded position will cover three Northern Kentucky counties (Boone, Kenton and Campbell) as a full-time reporter in our newsroom. With extensive training and mentorship, they will produce stories ranging from quick-hit dailies to longer features and investigations for broadcast, digital and social platforms, as well as contribute to breaking news coverage and occasionally appear as a guest on our weekday live radio show, Cincinnati Edition.
 
The successful candidate will have some demonstrated interest in journalism, whether as a student, professional or freelancer. But even more important than previous work is their interest in the profession, their curiosity and attention to detail, and their enthusiasm for serving all Cincinnati residents by producing the high-quality, in-depth news and information that the station is known for.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Reports news for on-air, web and social media, including short and long-form stories and interviews. This includes gathering audio, taking photos and videos, and demonstrating solid writing skills and news judgment.
  • Develop a new beat covering three Northern Kentucky counties in our listening area. Your work on this beat may include reporting on topics like local government, health, economic justice, criminal justice and education.
  • Prioritize and work on multiple stories concurrently and meet deadlines.
  • Participate in all fellowship-related training, and demonstrate mastery of key skills.
  • Cover breaking news as necessary.
  • Contribute to newsroom-wide special projects, such as election coverage.
  • Represent Cincinnati Public Radio professionally in the community, whether through newsgathering, on panels or at events.
  • Appear as a guest on Cincinnati Edition to discuss your work.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
  • Curiosity.
  • A demonstrated interest in the craft of journalism.
  • Experience in a professional work environment.
  • Strong writing and interviewing skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Advanced organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Familiarity with and appreciation for public radio news style.
  • Flexibility and ability to cover news when necessary, which may occasionally include nights or weekends.
  • A reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license.
Compensation and Benefits:
  • Salary of $48,000 per year, paid biweekly.
  • Eligible to participate in company sponsored health, dental, and vision insurance plans.
  • Eligible to participate in company sponsored 403(b) plan and eligible for matching contributions after one year of employment.
  • Employer paid basic life insurance and long-term disability insurance.
  • 15 days of paid time off per year.
  • 8 days of sick time per year.
