The Post - Cincy SPJ movie outing

We had a great Cincy SPJ movie outing last night! A group of us including Jenny Wohlfarth, Cara Owsley, Hagit Limor, Ginny McCabe and several others enjoyed seeing the movie together. A few of us like Jo-Ann Albers and Ginny went for pizza at Dewey's next door after the movie!

2018 EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM CONTEST 
CALL FOR ENTRIES

The Greater Cincinnati Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is looking for the most outstanding work appearing in print, online and on-air during 2017 in Southwestern Ohio (Cincinnati & Dayton markets), Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana.

Entries can be made in one or more of five categories:

ALL-MEDIA: includes the three most significant awards the chapter presents
for work done in any medium in 2017.

WRITTEN COMMUNICATION: covers articles appearing in a newspaper, in a magazine or posted online during 2017.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION: includes stories that were broadcast on a television station or appeared online during 2017.

AUDIO COMMUNICATION: covers material broadcast on any form of radio or produced as a podcast for online listening during 2017.

BEST OF SHOW: the best reporter in written, visual and audio communication, plus the best newspaper, magazine, web site, television and radio newscast.

ALL MEDIA AWARDS

AM-1 -- GERALD WHITE MEMORIAL AWARD
This is the most prestigious award presented by the Greater Cincinnati Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

It’s named in memory of longtime Cincinnati Enquirer investigative reporter Gerald White. The award is presented to an individual or team for excellence
in investigative reporting in any medium.

Entries will be judged on enterprise, depth of research and overall presentation.
The entry must include a one-page summary of the circumstances that prompted the story, the hurdles overcome in completing production and the impact generated by the story.

AM-2 -- CAMILLA WARRICK AWARD
This award honors journalists in any medium who use their professional role to make an impact on people in the community.

It's named for the late Cincinnati Enquirer and Post reporter and columnist Camilla Warrick.

Entries can be the work of an individual or team and must include a written statement that details the public service value of the project and the overall impact of the work.

AM-3 -- FIRST AMENDMENT AWARD
A free press is essential in a democracy and this award honors an individual journalist or group of journalists in any medium going to extraordinary lengths to protect the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The award recognizes excellence as journalists face constant challenges from governments, corporations or individuals trying to interrupt the free flow of information.

WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

W-1 -- BEST NEWS STORY
Outstanding coverage of a news event by an individual or team.  This is coverage that clearly stands out from the competition.

W-2 -- BEST NEWS FEATURE/NEWSMAKER PROFILE
Reporting that goes beyond traditional journalism to capture the human spirit of people who are clearly making an impact on the community.

W-3 -- BEST BEAT REPORTING
Outstanding work done by a single reporter or reporting team covering an assigned beat.  The entry may include up to six stories.

W-4 -- BEST INVESTIGATIVE/DATABASE REPORTING
Original in-depth reporting of an issue with wide-ranging community interest and impact.

W-5 -- BEST CONTINUING COVERAGE OR SERIES
This award reflects excellence in multiple reports on a single topic by an individual or team. The entry may include up to six stories.

W-6 -- BEST EDITORIAL
Best opinion/editorial articles appearing online or in a newspaper or magazine. Entries may include up to six pieces by the same writer.

Pam and Jennifer will discuss their award-winning Blacksmith media relations campaigns and how they successfully penetrated through the clutter of all the media messages that bombard the public. Jen also provided insight into the TV news industry having worked in it for more than 10 years before making her transition into PR four years ago.

Mike Canan, 37, is the Senior Director for Content Strategy with the E.W. Scripps Company, based here in Cincinnati. In that role, he works with Scripps TV stations across the country to help them deliver compelling, interesting news content. He previously served as editor of WCPO.com. In that role, he led the station's innovative digital journalism team. WCPO is the first local broadcast TV station in the country to launch a paid membership service. Before working at WCPO.com, Canan served as the managing editor for Scripps Treasure Coasts Newspapers in Florida where he ran the day-to-day operations of the newsroom. Canan is a graduate of Ohio University and holds a bachelor's degree in Journalism. He lives in Norwood with his wife and two sons. 

Michael Kilian is senior news director at Enquirer Media in Cincinnati. In his role, he oversees much of the local news report online at Cincinnati.com and in the printed Cincinnati Enquirer. He has worked for Gannett Co. Inc. news sites for much of the past quarter-century, including in Upstate New York, Vermont and Maryland before coming to Ohio in early 2015. He is a graduate of Cornell University and is a member of the Rotary Club of Cincinnati.

Our New Series: Ripped from the Headlines-How to Make Sense of a Crazy World
On January 18, 2018

“Real News vs. Fake News and How to Tell the Difference”.  The speaker will be veteran journalist, writing coach, editor and publisher Jo-Ann Huff Albers. She is a board member of the Cincinnati Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and serves on the communications committee of Woman’s City Club of Greater Cincinnati. Albers was a 2016-2017 member of the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Publishers Advisory Board. She is also the retired founding director of the Western Kentucky University School of Professional Journalism & Broadcasting.

The series will continue on February 15th and March 15th.

Cincinnati SPJ at the Movies - 'The Post' on Jan. 21 in Kenwood


Our chapter's first social event of 2018 will be a Cincinnati SPJ movie night to see the new Stephen Spielberg/Tom Hanks/Meryl Streep film "The Post."

The movie tells the story of how the Washington Post decided to publish The Pentagon Papers after the New York Times broke the story only to be ordered to stop further publication of the documents.

We'll be attending the *4:40 p.m. screening of the movie on Sunday, January 21 at the Kenwood Theatre at 7815 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, OH 45236. For more info., go to www.kenwoodtheatre.com 


Matinee ticket pricing is $7.50. If we have a group of 20 or more, the cost will be $7.

Cincinnati SPJ Board Member Jo-Ann Huff Albers to speak at Cedar Village

Jo-Ann Huff Albers will be the special guest at Cedar Village on Thursday, January 18 for the Third Thursday luncheon series. She will address "Real vs. Fake News" during the program.

Cincinnati SPJ Board President Ginny McCabe and Board Member Emil Dansker will also be in attendance for the luncheon.

About Jo-Ann Huff Albers
Jo-Ann Huff Albers, 80, retired founding director of the WKU School of Journalism & Broadcasting, worked for The Cincinnati Enquirer for 20 years in various capacities. Her final title there was Kentucky executive editor. Between leaving The Enquirer in May 1981 and coming to Bowling Green in May 1987, she was editor and publisher of Sturgis Journal in Michigan and Public Opinion in Chambersburg, Pa., and Gannett general news executive, working with Gannett News Service and USA Today.

She is a writing coach for the annual Mountain Workshops held by the WKU photojournalism program, edits the weekly bulletin of the Lockland Church of Christ, serves on the board of Cincinnati Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the communications committee of Woman’s City Club of Greater Cincinnati for which she does copyediting on its bulletin and website, and on Friday mornings reads news and opinion pages of The Enquirer on the radio for the blind. She was a 2016-17 member of The Enquirer’s Publishers Advisory Board. A member of the Journalism and Women Symposium, she has attended all but two JAWS camps since the late 1980's. 
   
She is a past president of the Ohio Newspaper Women’s Association and national Women in Communications Inc.

Open to all freelancers, including print, broadcast, radio and digital. Lunch will be available - Sandwich boxed lunches for $15. There will be lunch, a short talk and a closing Q and A.
