2018 EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM CONTEST CALL FOR ENTRIES
The Greater Cincinnati Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is looking for the most outstanding work appearing in print, online and on-air during 2017 in Southwestern Ohio (Cincinnati & Dayton markets), Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana.
Entries can be made in one or more of five categories:
ALL-MEDIA: includes the three most significant awards the chapter presents for work done in any medium in 2017.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION: covers articles appearing in a newspaper, in a magazine or posted online during 2017.
VISUAL COMMUNICATION: includes stories that were broadcast on a television station or appeared online during 2017.
AUDIO COMMUNICATION: covers material broadcast on any form of radio or produced as a podcast for online listening during 2017.
BEST OF SHOW: the best reporter in written, visual and audio communication, plus the best newspaper, magazine, web site, television and radio newscast.
ALL MEDIA AWARDS
AM-1 -- GERALD WHITE MEMORIAL AWARD This is the most prestigious award presented by the Greater Cincinnati Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
It’s named in memory of longtime Cincinnati Enquirer investigative reporter Gerald White. The award is presented to an individual or team for excellence in investigative reporting in any medium.
Entries will be judged on enterprise, depth of research and overall presentation. The entry must include a one-page summary of the circumstances that prompted the story, the hurdles overcome in completing production and the impact generated by the story.
AM-2 -- CAMILLA WARRICK AWARD This award honors journalists in any medium who use their professional role to make an impact on people in the community.
It's named for the late Cincinnati Enquirer and Post reporter and columnist Camilla Warrick.
Entries can be the work of an individual or team and must include a written statement that details the public service value of the project and the overall impact of the work.
AM-3 -- FIRST AMENDMENT AWARD A free press is essential in a democracy and this award honors an individual journalist or group of journalists in any medium going to extraordinary lengths to protect the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
The award recognizes excellence as journalists face constant challenges from governments, corporations or individuals trying to interrupt the free flow of information.
W-1 -- BEST NEWS STORY Outstanding coverage of a news event by an individual or team. This is coverage that clearly stands out from the competition.
W-2 -- BEST NEWS FEATURE/NEWSMAKER PROFILE Reporting that goes beyond traditional journalism to capture the human spirit of people who are clearly making an impact on the community.
W-3 -- BEST BEAT REPORTING Outstanding work done by a single reporter or reporting team covering an assigned beat. The entry may include up to six stories.
W-4 -- BEST INVESTIGATIVE/DATABASE REPORTING Original in-depth reporting of an issue with wide-ranging community interest and impact.
W-5 -- BEST CONTINUING COVERAGE OR SERIES This award reflects excellence in multiple reports on a single topic by an individual or team. The entry may include up to six stories.
W-6 -- BEST EDITORIAL Best opinion/editorial articles appearing online or in a newspaper or magazine. Entries may include up to six pieces by the same writer.
W-7 -- BEST BUSINESS NEWS STORY This award honors excellence in reporting by an individual or team on business topics.
W-8 -- BEST BUSINESS FEATURE/ANALYSIS/COLUMN An article that goes beyond the headline and takes an in-depth look at how an issue impacts consumers.
W-9 -- BEST GOVERNMENT ISSUES STORY Best reporting and writing about government issues and the impact they have on citizens.
W-10 -- BEST EDUCATION STORY Best reporting and writing about education issues at the primary, secondary and collegiate levels.
W-11 -- BEST HEALTH/MEDICAL STORY Best reporting and writing on health and medical matters and the impact they have on citizens.
W-12 -- BEST LIFESTYLE FEATURE Outstanding reporting and writing that captures of the essence of emerging trends impacting the lives of citizens.
W-13 -- BEST COMMUNITY ISSUES STORY Outstanding reporting and writing focusing on solutions to issues that are important to both urban and suburban communities.
W-14 -- BEST ARTS/ENTERTAINMENT STORY Excellence in reporting and writing about arts and entertainment, including music, dance, theater and art.
W-15 -- BEST ARTS/ENTERTAINMENT CRITIQUE Excellence in critiquing arts and entertainment performances and exhibitions.
W-16 -- BEST SPORTS STORY Outstanding reporting and writing about a sporting event. The entry can be a single report or series of reports by an individual or team.
W-17 – BEST SPORTS FEATURE Best reporting that goes beyond the scores and highlights of a game and focuses on people at the high school, college and professional levels.
W-18 -- BEST MAGAZINE STORY Outstanding reporting about people, places, issues, trends or other human interest topics appearing in a regularly published magazine.
W-19 -- BEST MAGAZINE INVESTIGATIVE/DATABASE STORY Outstanding investigative reporting and writing appearing in a regularly published magazine.
W-20 -- BEST NEWS/SPORTS BLOG Outstanding news/sports blog in a newspaper, magazine and online.
W-21 -- BEST NEWSPAPER/MAGAZINE DESIGN Best overall design of daily, weekly or monthly newspaper or magazine.
W-22 -- BEST NEWSPAPER/MAGAZINE GRAPHIC Best graphic appearing in a daily, weekly or monthly newspaper or magazine.
W-23 -- BEST WEB SITE DESIGN Best web site design.
W-24 -- BEST WEB GRAPHIC Best graphic appearing on a web site.
V-1 -- BEST NEWS STORY Best news story on broadcast television or online.
V-2 -- BEST FEATURE STORY Best feature story on broadcast television or online.
V-3 -- BEST INVESTIGATIVE/DATABASE REPORTING Best investigative story on broadcast television or online.
V-4 -- BEST BUSINESS REPORTING Best television or online business story.
V-5 -- BEST GOVERNMENT REPORTING Best coverage of government issues and their impact on citizens.
V-6 -- BEST CONSUMER REPORTING Best reporting of consumer issues on television or online.
V-7 -- BEST EDUCATION REPORTING Best reporting of K-12 or collegiate issues on television or online.
V-8 -- BEST HEALTH/MEDICAL REPORTING Best reporting on television or online of health and medical issues.
V-9 – BEST SPORTS STORY Best sports story.
V-10 – BEST SPORTS FEATURE STORY Best sports story that goes beyond the scores to focus on the individual.
V-11 -- BEST NEWS PHOTOGRAPHY Best news photography in print or online.
V-12 -- BEST SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY Best sports photography in print or online.
V-13 -- BEST VIDEOGRAPHY Best videography on television or online.
V-14 -- BEST PHOTO OR ART ILLUSTRATION Best illustration using photography and/or artwork in print or online.
A-1 -- BEST NEWS STORY Best news story appearing on radio.
A-2 -- BEST NEWS FEATURE STORY Best feature reporting and writing of a news event or personality.
A-3 -- BEST BUSINESS STORY Outstanding coverage of a business story.
A-4 -- BEST GOVERNMENT STORY Outstanding reporting of government issues. A-5 -- BEST EDUCATION STORY Outstanding coverage of K-12 or collegiate educational issues.
A-6 -- BEST HEALTH/MEDICAL STORY Outstanding coverage of health and medical issues.
A-7 -- BEST ARTS/ENTERTAINMENT STORY Outstanding coverage of arts and entertainment issues and personalities.

B-1 -- BEST OVERALL WRITTEN REPORTER Best overall daily, weekly or monthly newspaper. Please submit two copies of the entry.

B-3 – BEST NEWSPAPER SPECIAL SECTION Excellence by a newspaper in presenting news, sports or other special sections. Please submit two copies of the entry.

B-7 -- BEST OVERALL VISUAL REPORTER A compilation of work showing how the reporter stands out from competitors.
B-8 -- BEST RADIO NEWSCAST Best single radio newscast.
B-9 -- BEST RADIO REPORTER A compilation of work showing how the reporter stands out from competitors.

NOTE: SPJ members cannot use their membership to submit entries for non-members. Each entrant must pay the appropriate entry fee.
To become an SPJ member, sign up at spj.org and be sure to designate CINCINNATI PRO CHAPTER on the form. The annual national membership dues are $75.00 and can be paid in one sum or through monthly deductions. There are no local chapter dues.
